Thailand Stamps 2014: Thai Heritage Conservation Day 2014 (8 Giant Khon Masks)

Art Heritage: 8 Giant Khon Masks

Another 8 asks in the 2nd series of Khon mask stamp collection are composed of masks of Thotsakan, Kumpakan, Pipek, Pyatoot, Pyakhorn, Treesian, Samanakkha and Intharachit (a son of Thotsakan and Nang Montho), all of whom on these stamps are of Lustian lineage according to the tale of Ramakien. Giant Masks or demon faces are crafted upon human's facial structure but the background character of giants in a tale is being ferocious and bad-blooded so mask makers create and select only the prime features of enragement commonly seen on human to become a mold and painted on as a giant mask.
There are 2 types of giant eyes; wide-open eyes or bulging eyes which is a feature of Thotsakan, Intharachit and partially close eyes o crocodile eyes like those of Pyatoot and Treesian. Also, are there 2 kind of mouth; a grimace showing tusk-like canines (Thotsakan, Kumpakan, Pipek) and a claiming kind showing gritting teeth (Treesian, Pyakhorn, Intharachit). These masks are a truly remarkable creation of Thai artist that should be passed down as a legacy for our ancestor.
