Thailand Stamps 2016: Songkran Festival 2016

The Legend of Seven Songkran Goddesses

In Thai New Year Tradition, the legend of the seven Songkran Goddesses is a blief related to Songkran Day, the first day of the New Year celebrations according to the solar calendar. It is  said that the seven Songkran Goddesses were depicted as the seven days of the week with their own names which were Tungsa Thevi (Sunday), Koraka Thevi (Monday), Rakkasot Thevi (Tuesday), Montha Thevi (Wednesday), Kirinee Thevi (Thursday), Kimina Thevi (Friday), Mahotorn Thevi (Saturday). They were also described with different foods, weapons, and vehicle animals. Each goddess has four gestures to indicate when during the day the sun moves from the constellation of Pisces into Aries - standing (morning), sitting (afternoon), lying down with the eyes close (after midnight). To celebrate Thai New Year, in which this year falls on Wednesday in the evening, the Songkran Goddess is Montha Thevi in the gesture of lying down with eyes open mounting on a donkey, her vehicle. The seven Songkran goddesses that illustrate on this stamp issue are paintings by Ohm Rachavate,m a Thailand famous cartoonist.
